Practice makes perfect.

Well, now you can practice presentations until perfection with Microsoft PowerPoint Presenter Coach.

Although the tool has been available on the web version of PowerPoint for some time, it is now available on the web, Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android.

Here’s what the new feature can do.

PowerPoint Presenter Coach provides users with feedback on the pace of their presentation, the use of filler words and sensitive phrases, the quality of grammar, and even the lack of originality. Think of it as your very own virtual coach, ready to help you improve your presentation skills – anywhere, anytime.

The three new critiques in Presenter Coach for the web are:

1. Body language 

Have you heard of the 7-38-55 rule? The 7-38-55 rule is a concept that speaks on the communication of emotions (no pun intended). The rule informs us that 7 percent of meaning is communicated through spoken word, 38 percent is through tone of voice, and 55 percent is through body language. Many global presenters today,  including the likes of TEDx Talks speakers, would argue that great presentations actually encompass more than 55 percent of body language. With Microsoft’s Presenter Coach on PowerPoint, users will receive feedback in the summary report regarding: 

• how visible the presenter is to the audience (Clear view)
• whether the presenter is too close or too far from the camera (Distance)
• ensuring the presenter is directly facing the camera (Eye contact)

2. Repetitive language 

During presentations, it’s a common tendency between all of us to “fill the air” with filler words such as “umm” or “uhh”. But being clear and concise helps in articulating your message to the audience. Presenter Coach identifies words and phrases that are overused in the presentation. A list of synonyms is also provided to allow the presenter to diversify in their word choice for the next presentation, while expanding their presentational “word bank.”  

 

3. Pronunciation 

Enunciating the pronunciation of similar words with very different meaning can be tricky. Presenter Coach provides advice on the correct pronunciation of the words spoken throughout the rehearsal. When Presenter Coach perceives that a word is potentially mispronounced, that word will be displayed. Taking it one step further, Presenter Coach also provides an experience that helps the presenter practice pronouncing the word correctly. You will be able to listen to a recorded pronunciation guide of the word as many times as desired. One thing to note. When designing this feature, Microsoft has taken into consideration how accents can vary. With this in mind, they have optimized this recommendation for the “General American English” language and an option to disable this feedback is also available.
