Data is Everywhere
In today’s world, everyone around us is generating data. For every transaction (financial or otherwise) that takes place between individuals or organizations, data is being generated. For an individual, the importance of the data being generated from purchases of a small item (eg: toothpaste) is momentary and it loses significance once the transaction is completed, but for an organization, the same data could be invaluable and lead to meaningful insights into consumer behaviour and purchase patterns.
The challenge lies in the fact that data is being generated from a variety of sources and are being stored in different systems, formats, and structures that have no correlation to each other. For example, a large travel and tour company could be using at least 50 different data sources where customer information is stored, particularly because they work with a variety of OTAs and tour operators across the globe. Each of them uses their own system. The data sources could range from flat files to relation database management systems (RDBMS). This creates challenges to accumulate and aggregate the data to get a meaningful insight and make business decisions based on these key insights.
In the digital age, we are used to getting instantaneous responses with a tap of a button. The larger an organization grows, the bigger and wider the data becomes. Accumulating all the data from the different sources can take days, if not weeks, before any meaningful report can be generated. In most cases, organizations rely on software development companies to assist them in importing and analyzing the information. This could take more than 12-36 hrs depending on the size and spread of the data and its source. If a prospect comes to a business and it takes days to realize the lead, it would turn cold. Businesses which can reach out to its customer faster and with accurate data would stay ahead of the competition.

Informatica is the global leader in enterprise cloud data management. The Informatica PowerCentre framework provides a cloud-based tool for data integration based on ETL architecture. ETL (Extract, Transform and Load) is a process that extracts data from different database sources, transforms the data (calculations, validations, concatenations, etc.) and finally loads the data into the data warehouse system, from where data analytics on the entire dataset can be performed.
It may seem as though extracting data from multiple sources and loading it into a database is a simple programming task, but it is actually an extremely complex process.
